Relational Worship
Thursday, July 29 Relational Worship Before you begin, ask God to give you eyes to see him in the world around you, and to experience him throughout your day. READ REFLECT So how should we worship, apart from recognizing that worship isn’t merely singing songs in a dark room? The reality is that worship, when genuine, should make a difference in the way we treat one another seven days a week. Take a look at the passage from Micah again. Our concept of worship must go far beyond music, days and rituals. Those details don’t seem nearly as important as the way we treat our neighbors. Hosea, another Old Testament writer, stressed that our relationships are more important than the ( read more )

Sea Worship
Wednesday, July 28 Sea Worship Before you begin, ask God to give you eyes to see him in the world around you, and to experience him throughout your day. READ REFLECT There’s a children’s book called The Snail and the Whale. It’s the story of an adventurous snail that hitches a ride on the tail of a whale, and sets off for adventures around the world. In one of the passages in the book, the snail echoes the sentiments of probably everyone’s first encounter of the ocean: And she gazed at the sky, the sea, the land, The waves and the caves and the golden sand, She gazed and gazed, amazed by it all, And she ( read more )

Trembling Worship
Tuesday, July 27 Trembling Worship Before you begin, ask God to give you eyes to see him in the world around you, and to experience him throughout your day. READ REFLECT If you’ve ever considered how you worship, it’s doubtful that “trembling” comes to mind. Yet, in 1 Chronicles it says that all of the earth trembles before God, and that all the nations respond with, “The Lord reigns!” Any act that elicits that kind of response means it was a sincere and understood act of worship. It does no good to go through the right motions, sing the right songs, meet on the right days or say the right words if we aren’t interested ( read more )

Everyday Worship
Week 1: Everyday Worship Monday, July 26 Everyday Worship Before you begin, ask God to give you eyes to see him in the world around you, and to experience him throughout your day. READ REFLECT It’s summertime, and often folks find themselves out of the normal rhythms of their everyday life. So over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a look at how we can maintain an attitude of worship wherever we are, even if it’s at the beach. And if you’re the kind of person who equates worship with acoustic guitars and breathy singing, we’ll challenge that assumption. This week, we’ll dive deeper into the passage from 1 Chronicles. Whether you&rsquo ( read more )

The Last Word
Friday, July 23 The Last Word Pray through the Lord’s Prayer. READ REFLECT Turn to the very last word in the Bible. What does it say? This is one of those words that is used so much that it can lose its meaning. It’s a word that is generally an expression of agreement, confirmation and ratification. It’s like signing your name on the dotted line. And it’s binding. Amen is not just a word we say; it’s a decision we make. “Yes, I’m a part of that,” or “Yes, I want that.” Jesus is called the Amen in Revelation because he is the fulfillment of the binding contract that ( read more )

Mousetraps
Thursday, July 22 Mousetraps Take a moment to ask God for his guidance today. READ REFLECT “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Mousetraps haven’t changed much since Jesus taught us this prayer. You would think that mice would start avoiding the traps after some time, but cheese is tempting. And we all have our brand of cheese. As James wrote, God does not lead us into sin. He doesn’t tempt anyone or try to set the trap while we’re not looking. So, this part of the prayer may be better understood as asking God to lead us away from temptation. Everyone is tempted. Even Jesus was directly tempted by ( read more )

The Others
Wednesday, July 21 The Others Take a moment to pray that God fills your heart today. READ REFLECT “Once our eyes have been opened to see the enormity of our offense against God, the injuries which others have done to us appear by comparison extremely trifling. If, on the other hand, we have an exaggerated view of the offenses of others, it proves that we have minimized our own.” (The Message of the Sermon on the Mount, John Stott) God has perfect grace toward you. We have imperfect grace toward others. Forgiving others is gratitude for the perfect grace that we have been given. Forgive again, today, those who you forgave yesterday. Repeat tomorrow. RESPOND Ask for the Spirit’s help ( read more )

Overdrawn
Tuesday, July 20 Overdrawn Reflect for a few minutes on God’s grace. Not as something in the past, but in the present. READ REFLECT “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Most of us like the first part of this line. It’s the second part where we struggle. It’s the only part of the prayer that Jesus expanded on in Matthew 6:14-15. Why? Maybe it’s because if we ask God to forgive us in the same way that we forgive others, technically, we’re asking to have as broken of a relationship with God as we do with the people who we can’t forgive. Jesus keeps writing ( read more )

No MSG
Week 2: The Lord’s Prayer Monday, July 19 No MSG Take a moment to thank God for what he has provided in your life. Share the details. READ REFLECT “Give us this day, our daily bread.” Praying this line of the Lord’s Prayer confirms in us that it is God who meets our everyday needs. This should inspire us to be thankful for the good things we receive. It’s also a call to something more—because most of us receive more than daily provisions. We spent last week asking God to bring his kingdom to us and the world and to make his will know in us and through us. What do you think ( read more )

Changes
Friday, July 16 Changes Take a moment to focus on God as your Father. READ REFLECT Many people see the first half of the Lord’s Prayer as asking God to go about his business, off somewhere else, through someone else. But the way God goes about his business is through us. Through you. We’re not praying to some distant God doing distant things. We are praying that our Father’s love, kingdom and will would be known in us and through us. The religious elite rejected the followers of Jesus as not good enough. His disciples were petty, self-centered and concerned with personal power and position. But God still chose them. They were ordinary, imperfect and unprepared, but God ( read more ) |
